November 13, 2024

What is a “crag” you may ask? In rock climber’s terms, it’s an outdoor rock playground. Basically, a crag is a place to have fun, get exercise, and connect with nature. It’s a set area where people who like to climb, climb.

Today, we’ll be breaking down some of the best crags for Front Range climbers to get outside, no matter your skill level. Colorado is world renowned as a climbing destination, read on to find out some of the local picks.

Clear Creek Canyon, Golden

Clear Creek Canyon is regarded as a destination climbing area. As one of the best in the Front Range, climbers will travel to the canyon to enjoy a variety of sport & trad routes, ranging from difficult to novice. An excellent place to climb all times of year, as there are sections with both direct sun and shade. Depending on how far you go into the canyon, a quick drive into downtown Golden greets you after the climb.

Boulder Canyon, Boulder

Just minutes from downtown, Boulder Canyon is the local’s pick for sport routes in the area. It’s hard to beat a summer day in the shade — temps can drop significantly the further you go up the canyon. Enjoy some fine granite climbing throughout the canyon.

North Table Mountain, Golden

An excellent spot for your first time out. Endless top-rope opportunities await — easy access from the top of the cliffs allow simple roping setups. Although the basalt can be slippery to some, the short approach along with a variety of grades makes it a good spot to bring new climbers and veterans alike. After sending at North Table, head into Golden for a beer or bite to eat.
